Why do we pledge allegiance to a flag?

Anyone ever notice this about our Pledge of Allegiance? I can understand pledging to our country or pledging to democracy and feedom, but why do we pledge to a flag? It is an inanimate object. I do not like telling an inanimate object that I will obey it.

We pledge to the flag because it is a symbol. Every piece of it has a meaning.

Well, as a pledge is a symbol, just like a flag is, the whole thing is highly symbolic. It’s like a coronation… what’s up with the sword tap and crown and all the stuff?

    I don’t
If I was going to pledge allegiance to anything, it would be the Constitution and the ideals for which it stands

The American Flag stands for something. Some people it stands for something well others it stands for something different.. Things like that. When you stand up and say the pledge you are pledge that you will defend what that flag stands for.

I like Paladin’s idea: put up a copy of the Constitution and pledge allegiance to it.

Actually, that’s what they do in Ireland. This is the oath they take before assuming seats in Irish Parliament:
"I (your name) do solemnly swear true faith and allegiance to the Constitution of the Irish Free State as by law established…"

Other countries have oaths of allegiance, but they are allegiance to the king/queen, not a piece of cloth.

According to Wikipedia, Saudi Arabia requires allegiance to the piece of cloth, but it’s a religious thing, as it has the Islamic declaration of faith.

The flag used to be a symbol of all that parents and grandparents fought for. People were proud to be Americans because they had their blood, sweat and tears in it.

Since the 50′s, that’s the 1950"s, society and its morals, have steadily declined in the wake of "progress."

It’s all about the "good life" now. We deprive ourselves of nothing and we apparently don’t feel any obligation to respect what our forebearers went through to keep this a nation of the "land of the free and home of the brave."

You have to look beyond the mere act of "pledging allegance to a flag" as a ritual. Think about all that it represents. That’s what it’s about.

its hilarious, people say this is a free country, that it is a true democracy, its all b.s. people! open your denying eyes! We are the only country, other than Nazi Germany, to ever have a pledge of allegiance! EVER!! Think about it, from 1776 to 1861, no citizen recited a "pledge of allegiance" to the central government! The pledge was written in 1892 by a socialist, to promote socialism in the most socialistic institution -government schools. The author Francis Bellamy belonged to an elitist socialist movement in Boston known as "Nationalism," whose members wanted the federal government to nationalize most of the American economy. He saw government schools as a means to that end.

The original salute to the U.S. flag was an outstretched hand, like that of the National Socialist German Workers’ Party. They advocated nationalizing the economy. After the National Socialist German Workers’ Party tried to impose socialism upon the world, the U.S. flag salute changed to the modern hand over the heart.

In the 1930s the law under the National Socialist German Workers’ Party required everyone to pledge allegiance, similar to many U.S. laws that have tried to require school children to recite the pledge. Jehovah’s Witnesses were officially banned for refusing to join the raised palm salute to flags in schools and at other events under the National Socialist German Workers’ Party. Witnesses believed that people who enjoy reciting pledges of allegiance are people who worship government. Many of the German Witnesses were imprisoned in concentration camps. So there you have it, our "Democracy" is actually Socialist! Why is it that we parade around like a Democracy, and not even get rid of a ridiculous thing like the Pledge of Allegiance? I love my Country, but fear my Government! Down with this system!
