Hydrogen fuel enhancement methods like hydrogen injection are practiced to reduce exhaust emissions of internal combustion engines and improve fuel economy.
Automotive fuel enhancement systems work by injecting a hydrogen rich mixture, or pure hydrogen into the intake manifold of an internal combustion engine combined with air/fuel ratio, and timing modification. A small amount of hydrogen added to the intake air-fuel charge permits the engine to operate with leaner air-to-fuel mixture than otherwise possible. As the air/fuel mix approaches 30:1 the temperature of combustion substantially decreases, which effectively mitigates NOx production. Efficiency gains of 10-20% have been claimed. A 50% reduction in gasoline consumption, at idle, was reported by numerically analyzing an on-board hydrogen reformer operating at 80% efficiency; a 50% reduction in gasoline consumption is a 100% increase in mileage. To achieve an actual increase in gas mileage the air/fuel ratio, and timing of the engine need appropriate modification. At lower air/fuel ratios the timing need not be adjusted.
According to "numerical analysis" "gasoline consumption [%]" can be substantially effected by modifying the "efficiency" of an on-board hydrogen reformer. Up to a 50% reduction in gasoline consumption can be achieved at a "torque" of 15 Nm, and a hydrogen reformer operating at 80% efficiency. A 50% reduction in gasoline consumption is equivalent to a 100% increase in mileage.
